Measuring activity of a single enzyme

Enzyme immobilization is frequently used in biosensors and bio-fuel cells. The electronic charges produced by the enzymes are collected by the support which is often nanostructured. For a number of reasons, enzyme activity is reduced after immobilization, e.g. due to a modification of enzyme tertiary structure and/or enzyme orientation with respect to support (see Fig. 1). At best, only a rough estimate of enzyme activity may be determined. The present project aims measuring the activity of a single enzyme using a tunnel nanoelectrode.
