Crack propagation

by Hervé Henry - published on

During crack propagation complex patterns can be observed. Using a phase field model of crack propagation we study under what conditions these pattern arise in order to better understand experimental results.

We have for instance studied the shape of unstable crack propagating at high velocities or the shape of crack front propagating under mixed mode (I+III).

Images of the crack surface (iso surface φ=0.5) taken from simuulations of fast ccrack propagation (branching) and of crack under mixed mode loading (I+III) leading to crack front fragmentation.
