Electrons-photons-surfaces is an experimental physics group, and a central aspect of our work concerns the design and build of novel experiments that allow us to explore physical phenomena in original ways.

Low-temperature, polarized, hyperspectral microscopy experiment.

Our hyperspectral microscopy experiment works with polarized light at low temperatures. By exploiting the optical selection rules, this experiment allows us to explore charge, spin and valley dynamics in a variety of semiconductors at the micron scale. UHV scanning tunneling luminescence microscope.

Our scanning tunneling luminescence microscopy experiments allow for the study of wavefunction localization via the measurement of the opto-electronic properties of semiconductors at the nanometre scale. For more information contact Jacques Peretti.

The dilution refrigerator.

Our dilution refrigerator allows us to access ultra-low tempreatures in the mK range. When coupled to microwave equipment this experiment is used for quantum simulations and the study of Andreev bound states. For more information contact Landry Bretheau or Jean-Damien Pillet.

Time and Angular Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy experiments are performed in collaboration with scientist on Large Installations in France (TEMPO Beamline at SOLEIL) and abroad (ELETTRA and FERMI, Italy ; FLASH and XFEL, Germany ; SLS, Switzerland ; SPRING 8, Japan). Spin resolved, low energy photo-emission : developed during the 70s with the help of Murray Campbell, a UHV Mott detector facilitates the study of spin resolved electronic band structure.

The savoir-faire within the group is also used to help the research activities of the other groups within the laboratory via the maintenance and expertise of a number of commercial apparatus including :

  • Raman micro-spectroscopy

  • Optical microscopy

  • Fluorescence imaging
