Characterization of nano-objets by electron microscopy

For the group thematic axes, the structural and chemical characterization of new nanostructured materials is emphaized. The objective, to achieve specific properties, is to perfectly master this nano structuring.
As a first example, let us consider heterostructures core shell associating photo and magnetostrictive compounds synthesized in the laboratory. At the end of each synthesis, the size distribution and the morphometric characteristics of these nano-objects are analyzed by scanning microscopy. Their chemical composition is also specified by EDX spectroscopy.

The quality of the interface between the two compounds and their microstructure are crucial for the efficiency of the elastic coupling between the two materials. It is possible to access this information by transmission electron microscopy measurements coupled to EDX spectroscopic mapping.

As a second example, let us consider the study of "active" nanoparticles and biological probes : their fine structural characterization (structure, mesh parameters and crystal defects) is carried out by HRTEM microscopy.
